SLA
A pattern with agreed surface and inspection scope
Why this part is made in resin
The pattern surface is reproduced in the mould. Identify fits and the parting plane; finishing scope and dimensions to inspect are agreed before printing. Resin selection considers the specific silicone and coating.
Silicone patterns and moulds: FormlabsWhat this process cannot do here
No fine print
- We do not make silicone moulds or castings. We supply the master; your casting workshop or prototyping department makes the mould.
- Casting shrinkage is determined by the casting resin and workshop process.
- Thin protrusions need assessment and transport protection. Elongation at break does not establish pattern drop resistance.
- State moulding temperature and duration. Specimen HDT does not replace assessment of heating the finished master.
- Uncured resin residue can inhibit silicone curing. Washing, post-curing and any coating must be agreed; the casting workshop checks the specific silicone on a sample.
- Support contact areas and mould-facing surfaces are agreed in the enquiry.
- Single-piece printability is assessed with orientation and supports. A split may be reproduced in the mould.
How your project moves forward
- Model and parting planeState file units, fits, the parting plane and allowances specified by the casting workshop.
- Resin and moulding processResin and finishing are agreed for the geometry, silicone and moulding conditions.
- Quote within 24 business hoursPrinting and surface finishing for the mould are quoted separately.
- Printing, washing and curingPrint, wash and cure settings are selected for the resin and agreed scope.
What the quotation covers
An SLA master is quoted individually. Pricing includes resin, platform use, supports, washing, curing and finishing for the mould. A technologist reviews the model and required surface.

What to prepare for a quote
Model and parting plane
A model or drawing, target dimensions and parting plane. Identify any specified allowance.
Casting process
Name the silicone, casting material, temperature and process duration. Describe any planned coating; the casting workshop should test compatibility on a sample.
Surface and quantity
Identify surfaces for sanding or polishing. Include pattern quantity and mould-making timing.
Send what you have. We will clarify the remaining details when reviewing your enquiry.
How to order
I have a 3D model
Send the model, file units and quantity. Identify visible surfaces; an engineer confirms resin selection, supports and finishing.
Quote the master patternI need a model
Attach a drawing, sketch or photos with dimensions. Describe the part and visible surfaces; model preparation and printing are quoted separately.
Send a drawing and descriptionFrequently asked questions
Will you make castings from this mold?
We supply a master with the agreed finish. The casting workshop makes the silicone mould and castings.
How many castings can a mold made from such a master withstand?
The casting workshop assesses casting count from silicone, geometry and process. Our scope covers pattern manufacture and agreed inspection.
Master made of resin or polyamide?
We compare the required surface, geometry and finishing. Resin may reduce work on fine features; costs are compared for your model.
When does a master make sense instead of a steel mold?
The decision depends on quantity, planned changes, geometry and the casting workshop quote. The separate injection-moulding comparison helps organise cost and lead-time assumptions.
Will every silicone cure on an SLA master?
We do not confirm compatibility with every silicone. Uncured resin residue can inhibit its curing. We agree pattern preparation; before making the mould, the casting workshop should test the specific silicone and coating on a sample.
Can you supply a master with a specified tolerance?
State inspection dimensions, tolerances and measurement datums. We confirm inspection scope after reviewing the model and finish. A material study does not establish every master’s tolerance; sanding or a coating affects the finished dimension.
