50–500 units: SLS or CNC machining?

For 50, 200 or 500 parts, compare complete orders: setup, parts, finishing and inspection. Quantity alone does not set the boundary between SLS and CNC. First check whether both options meet the part requirements.

Where the money sits in milling

CNC programming, fixturing and setup are spread across the order. Machining time depends on geometry and material; tight tolerances and extra setups can add work. Ask the supplier to quote your drawing and quantity, including inspection and finishing.

Where the money sits in sintering

SLS pricing depends on material, geometry, build layout and post-processing. A larger series may use the chamber better, while the model and layout also affect process time. File preparation does not automatically include design, measurement or functional testing.

Discount tiers and where they come from

Published SLS quantity discounts: 100 parts: −5%, 500 parts: −8%, 1,000 parts: −10%. These are our commercial terms; they do not define a physical CNC break-even boundary. The indicative calculator applies them.

Batch mode has a separate 8% discount and a 10–14 business days window. Standard: 5–10 business days. We confirm a specific series after reviewing the file, quantity and schedule. Separate deliveries may need separate setups; state whether you order the whole series or individual batches.

What does this mean for decision-making

  For small series, compare full totals including setup and minimum order value. A simple part may also have a competitive CNC quotation at low quantity.

  For channels or undercuts, check tool access in CNC and powder-removal access in SLS. Splitting and assembly also have a cost.

  For stable designs and repeat deliveries, compare several volumes. Assess injection moulding with quotations for both the tool and moulded part.

What this article does not resolve

Obtain the CNC price from its supplier. Send both suppliers the same model, material, tolerances, critical surfaces and acceptance criteria. Include expected design changes.
