Checklist: model ready for SLS
17 checks before sending your model. The reference values apply to PA12. They do not establish strength or guarantee a fit; PA11 and TPU need separate assessment.
- 01
Geometry
Check minimum feature sizes and overall dimensions. The reference values apply to PA12 and do not establish part strength.
- 0.6 mm
Measure the thinnest vertical wall in the model.
Orientation relative to the layers matters. Walls at or below the minimum may warp; horizontal walls have a separate value in the table.
- 1.0 mm
Check the smallest hole.
Holes below the minimum may close during printing. Accuracy also depends on wall thickness; holes for a specified fit need separate assessment.
- 0.8 mm
Find the thinnest freestanding pin or wire.
The recommended diameter applies to small freestanding features. Design ribs and snap-fits for the geometry, load and assembly requirements.
Check the length, width and height of the part.
The preliminary PA12 envelope in the calculator is 159.8 × 159.8 × 295.5 mm. We confirm orientation and print feasibility after reviewing the model; larger parts need assessment of splitting or another technology.
- 02
Powder inside
Unsintered powder supports the part during printing. Plan access to every internal space that needs cleaning.
Mark every enclosed void in the model.
An enclosed cavity can trap powder. If the interior must be clean, show access to it in the model or a cross-section.
- 3.5 mm
Add powder drain holes to every cavity.
The recommended diameter is a starting point. Channel length, shape and tool access determine whether the interior can be cleaned.
- min. 2
Check the number and position of powder drain holes.
The manufacturer recommends at least two holes. Their position must provide access to the interior; the number alone does not guarantee powder removal.
- 03
Fits
Distinguish parts assembled after printing from mechanisms printed together. Test the required fit on a sample.
List all pairs that are meant to fit into each other.
Identify mating surfaces, required clearance and critical dimensions. Include a drawing for fits that the model alone does not specify.
- 0.2 mm
Choose clearance for parts assembled after printing.
The stated value applies to contact areas below 20 mm². Use the separate table value for larger areas; other powders need assessment.
- 0.3 mm
Choose clearance for a print-in-place assembly.
The stated value applies to contact areas below 20 mm². Larger areas need more clearance; also plan access for powder removal.
Agree measurement conditions and a fit test.
Agree temperature, humidity and measurement timing. Datasheet specimen conditions do not define a universal conditioning time for every part.
- 04
Text and markings
A legible marking helps identify the part. Check its size, position and access for cleaning.
- 4.5 mm
Check letter height in raised text.
Smaller letters may be illegible. Also check stroke width and relief height; finishing can reduce fine detail.
- 3.0 mm
Check letter height in engraved text.
The manufacturer gives a separate minimum for engraved letters. Check depth, groove width and orientation in the full table.
Place the marking on a non-working surface.
Avoid mating and friction surfaces. The marking should remain accessible for cleaning and reading in the intended working conditions.
- 05
The file itself
Check the mesh, units and part name. A prepared model helps analysis; describe requirements in your enquiry.
Check if the mesh is closed.
An open mesh may prevent a reliable volume reading. Check the analysis report; model repair may need separate assessment.
Export in millimetres.
The wrong unit changes dimensions, volume and price. Compare the measured dimensions with the actual part.
Use a clear part name for the file.
A clear name and revision help associate quantities and requirements with the correct model when quoting or reordering.
Where do these numbers come from?
- Formlabs, Design specifications for 3D models (Fuse 1 generation), checked 12 October 2026
- Formlabs, "Fuse Series SLS Design Guide", March 2023
- Manufacturer minima are starting points for model assessment. Agree measurement conditions and required fits before production; datasheet specimens do not guarantee finished part properties.
